The Challenge

The global blind population stands at 44 million and is projected to rise to 120 million by the year 2050. More than half of these individuals lose their sight to preventable and treatable conditions, due to inadequate eye care access.

In many emerging countries, the number of ophthalmologists is alarmingly low in comparison to the local population. For instance, Mozambique has only 30 ophthalmologists for approximately 30 million people, and Malawi has just 14 ophthalmologists serving around 18 million individuals.
In regions where nearby ophthalmologists are absent, patients are forced to travel for hours along poorly developed transport routes to reach a hospital. The distance to ophthalmologists is prohibitively far for many.

The Solution

This campaign focused on doctors who are not ophthalmologists, and considered the potential if they could become ophthalmologists. This led to the development of the Smart Eye Camera, a product that allows for eye examinations by simply attaching it to a smartphone.

The Smart Eye Camera enables in-depth examinations, such as the early detection of cataracts, without requiring a visit to the hospital. Its design is simple enough to be manufactured using a 3D printer, reducing the price to 1/30 of traditional medical equipment. Additionally, it features an intuitive user interface and non-verbal tutorial movies, eliminating the need for training sessions.

This innovation simplifies eye examinations for medical professionals worldwide.
